LONDON (AFP) - London shares closed lower on Wednesday as jitters from the current financial crisis continued to unnerve traders with energy companies suffering the most.

The index of top shares shed 0.79 percent to close at 5095.57 points.

The most traded stock was Vodafone with 204 million units changing hands followed by Royal Bank of Scotland which saw 97.4 million shares switch owners.

Wednesday's winners were the London Stock Exchange, which closed up 58.5 pence -- or 7.10 percent -- at 882.5.

British Energy was also on the up on the back of news that it had accepted a takeover bid by French company EDF. It finished up 41 pence -- or 5.66 percent -- to stand at 765.

Casualties included Inmarsat which shed 50 pence -- or 9.09 percent -- to end at 500, and Vedanta, which was down 103 pence -- or 6.75 percent -- to end at 1424.
