LONDON (AFP) - The pound benefitted from a weaker euro on Thursday on heightened concerns about the European economy.
Sterling was slightly down against the dollar, however, as the greenback was supported by a fall in crude oil prices and gains in US financial shares.
The single European currency was sold off after the European Commission had on Wednesday warned that the 15-member eurozone is teetering on the brink of recession.
News of a wider-than-expected US trade deficit in July did not hurt the greenback which has been on a winning streak in recent weeks.
