"The entire Full Sail Family is proud and excited for all of Darren's remarkable accomplishments. It is exciting to see him excelling in the film industry," said Garry Jones, President of Full Sail. "He continues to be an example to students of the success that can be achieved when your passion is put to the test."
It is Bousman's fourth movie release in the role of director. In addition to directing and co-writing Saw II, he has also directed independent features such as Butterfly Dreams (2000) and Identity Lost (2001). Bousman is originally from Kansas and after attending Kansas University (KU), he transferred in his sophomore year to attend Full Sail and receive his film degree. It was during this time that he began writing and directing short horror films. After graduating, Bousman relocated to Los Angeles to begin directing music videos and commercials, and in early 2003, he became a freelance director for The Firm, a Beverly Hills-based management company.
After writing the script, The Desperate, Bousman was introduced to Twisted Pictures producers, Gregg Hoffman, Mark Burg, and Oren Koules which sparked the seed that Leigh Whannell and Bousman would later turn into last year's smash hit, Saw II.
Lions Gate President of Distribution, Steve Rothenberg, said, "While other horror franchises are declining, Saw is continuing to grow. The filmmakers and the marketing team have managed to keep it innovative." Bousman further added, "The thing I think is the reason that Saw I and II were so successful was that Saw I featured no-name directors, a no-name writer, no-name actors, and Lions Gate made that all happen. Then they could have had anybody direct Saw II because it became such a hit, but they again chose a no-name director. I think it was fresh. It was new. Now Saw III is even better."
